With April comes one of our favorite weekends of the year, the weekend of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance! This 3-day series of events is a magical experience each year and this past week’s 2016 Show did not disappoint. Although the detail of this project can require long hours in the office and the set-up & tear-down of each event can be draining physically & mentally, there is not a moment we forget how worth it the hard work is. McFarlane Promotions has been involved with this event since the inception in 2005 and we are proud to watch the event flourish & develop each year. We are also proud to watch the staff grow into Car Experts & Enthusiasts in addition to being Event Coordinators.
Every year as we start to breakdown the Concours field at the close of Sunday, I am truly sad the weekend is over and wish we can do it all again the following weekend. Let’s take a moment and reminisce on all of the fabulous moments of the 2016 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.
ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC COCKTAIL PARTY PRESENTED BY THE LOT – Friday, April 8th
The weekend began with a big bang as The Lot hosted the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Contemporary Classic Cocktail Party. The Lot’s artistic atmosphere set the stage for a showcase of incredible Rolls Royces, scrumptious appetizers, fine wines, and Glenfiddich scotch tastings.
Over 400 guests were treated to a magnificent display of carefully crafted performances, complete with silver Rolls Royce girls swaying atop the adjacent building, masterfully playing the giant piano mural above the Rolls Royce Dawn provided by O’Gara Coach. Towering over the attendees, a larger-than life chandelier stilt walker kept the champagne flowing throughout the night.
THE BMW TOUR D’ELEGANCE – Saturday, April 9th
BMW Tour d’Elegance offered over 200 attendees a once in a lifetime experience to cruise along San Diego’s most scenic freeways to visit one of a kind collections and mingle with other car enthusiasts. The Tour d’Elegance kicked off at Chuck Spielman’s Only Yesterday Museum, then made several more stops at fascinating San Diego location including the USS Midway, the San Diego Air & Space Museum and Il Fornaio Restaurant.
ASTON MARTIN SAN DIEGO MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD & EVIL PRESENTED BY FRASER YACHTS CALIFORNIA – Saturday, April 9th
Personally the Saturday night party is always my favorite and the 2016 Aston Martin San Diego Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil presented by Fraser Yachts California did not change my feelings on that! Each year the McFarlane team is honored to develop and conceptualize a new event theme and décor concept for the Saturday night event. This challenge is incredibly fulfilling and allows our creative impulses to be unleashed! This year’s epic soiree led entrants, judges, sponsors, and a few lucky members of the public through an evening of adventure filled with temptation and desire.
Over 1000 guests were directed down a winding maze before entering the party, where they were prompted to choose between good or evil before entering the extravagant garden inspired event which featured three hosted bars with craft cocktails by Hendricks Gin, samplings from 14 incredible local restaurants, a secret whiskey tasting room, a silent and live auction, and the unveiling of the Aston Martin DB11.
Traditionally this party is held underneath the open skies at the Ellen Browning Scripps Park (the same location the Concours take place just a few hours later – yikes, fast turnover!). With the scare of rain in the forecast, our McFarlane team had to scout potential indoor venues and develop a tenting plan all within the few days leading up to the event. We decided to continue to hold the event at the Park beneath a 80×120 tent. We even developed a covered maze so that guests did not have to walk across soggy grass to enter the venue. While the rain held off during the party, we cannot imagine the event now without the tent structure which helped to define the split of good & evil and create a more intimate (and more warm) experience for the guests.
The fabulous entertainment was a focal point throughout the night and helped to set in stone the event theme.
THE 12TH ANNUAL LA JOLLA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE 2016 – Sunday, April 10th
The weekend event’s concluded on a high note at the Ellen Browning Scripps Park with 232 incredible automobiles displayed along the picturesque shores of La Jolla for the viewing pleasure of 10,000 guests.
From the French Curves of Buggattis and Delahayes, to incredible one-of a kind automobiles, American classics, vintage racers and more, this year’s La Jolla Concours d’Elegance was a treat for the senses. Blue skies over the bluffs of the Pacific Ocean, and crisp ocean breezes made for perfect weather and a clear take off for the flyover of vintage airplanes by Allen Airways.
In addition to the endless display of motorized vehicles, the field also featured lively entertainment from Dave Patrone, a Wine & Gin Tasting Garden, a VIP Lunch & Lounge, Hospitality Suites, Exhibitor Lounge and much more!
As the Show came to a close all ages got involved in the judging as the Hagerty Youth Judges team announced their picks followed by over 100 esteemed judges who escorted winning vehicles to the stage to redeem their trophies. The Best of Show trophy and French Curves Class winner went to the streamlined 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition Disappearing Top Convertible with its elegant flowing lines. Owned by Ken & Ann Smith of La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe, CA, this art piece truly exemplifies the very best of those marvelous golden years of automotive design.
The 2017 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is on course to produce the most extravagant and elegant affair yet. McFarlane Promotions is thrilled to work again with the amazing car entrants, sponsors, vendors, judges, and volunteer committee who passion for the Show inspires us every day.
Save the date for a weekend of beautiful cars, world class parties and over-the-top decadence; April 7th – April 9th, 2017.
